4 Tips to Help You Relax in Front of the Camera

Being in front of the camera for photos feels awkward enough. We understand that for many people, being on video feels even less natural. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you prepare:

1. You CAN look at the camera

For natural, authentic-feeling photos, you’re often told not to look at the camera (we tell our clients this for photos!). In a session film, however, it is most true to the moment to treat the camera/camerawoman as another character in your story, interacting with them as you normally would.

2. You don’t have to know what you’re doing

It’s completely normal to need guidance, especially at the beginning of the session. You don’t have to know what you’re doing! We’ll give feedback or offer prompts as needed.

However, if you’re not getting any feedback while in front of the camera, that just means whatever you’re doing is perfect. Keep doing what you’re doing!

3. Doing something is always better than doing nothing

If you feel awkward, remember there are no “right” answers in what you should be doing. In general, action > inaction. Do a silly dance, laugh at yourself, whisper to your partner about how awkward you feel–whatever you want! The more you interact, the more comfortable you’ll feel, and the more footage we’ll have.

4. Remember you’re not live-streaming

Take peace in knowing the video will be edited. Anything you feel is unflattering can simply be cut out.

You say you use camcorders. What does that mean?

We record all session films on camcorders from the early to mid 2000s. Depending on the session, we will either use miniDV or tapeless cameras. After much experimentation and trial and error, we landed on this format because it maximizes the nostalgia of the early 2000s look without sacrificing the reliability of a digital medium.

In the early 2000s, we’d just record the video and sometimes put it on a DVD or VHS. Is that what you’re doing?

We import and convert footage into a modern format. Then we go through the footage and choose clips of the best moments and cut them together in a documentary-style, edited home movie. That video, along with the best individual clips, will be delivered in an online gallery. Your home movie will also be preserved into a linen video book so it can be enjoyed tangibly again and again.
