Family Photos at Home — 3 Tips to Help You Prepare | Fauna & Film

When most people think of family photos, they imagine photos taken either outdoors or in a studio. For so many of us, that’s all we’ve ever seen. But what about the magic of family photos at home? We spend so much time in our homes, making core memories with our loved ones without even realizing it. The comfort that comes from being in your safe space is one of many reasons why I love in-home family sessions.

If you’ve got a session coming up to take family photos at home, here are our top 3 tips to help you prepare:

1. Tidy, but Don’t Clean

I know, I know, this might not feel intuitive. If you’re having a photographer come to your house to preserve the way it looks, you may be inclined to deep clean every square inch of the place. For most families, that’s not necessary! These photos are meant to document the authenticity of your daily life. Tidiness can be helpful as we move through your space, but there is value to the comfort and relaxation of a home that feels lived in.

2. Prepare an Activity

A core part of our process is creating a session that doesn’t feel like a session. One of the most significant ways we achieve that is by making sure our clients have something to do during our time together. Rather than just standing stiffly and smiling at the camera, we document the authentic moments that come from a family spending quality time together.

For family photos at home, the options are limitless. You can choose to do something as simple as reading books together on the floor or as complicated as baking together. Try to think of an activity that you can use to ground yourself in the moment. For many people, that can mean something that involves multiple of the five senses. Just make sure you have any necessary supplies ready to use at our session!

3. Pare Down the Space

As you prepare, remember that the session does not need to include every room in your house. Feel free to narrow down a few favorites, considering things like where the best natural light comes in and which spaces feel most meaningful to your family. And don’t forget the exterior of your home—your patio or garden can be a beautiful option.

Family photos at home can be so special and meaningful. For a homebody like me, my home is my safe space. I’ve put so much time and care into creating an environment that I love and feel safe in, so of course I want that space to be the backdrop for photos with my loved ones.
